Description

The Role: Suffolk, (a vertically integrated general contractor and investment business in the US), is seeking a strategic expert to lead its exploration of Artificial Intelligence applications for the construction industry, with a technical focus on generative AI and large language models, and a domain focus within architecture and engineering (A/E) specifically, and construction more generally. The role would collaborate with both technical and business stakeholders to develop and execute a comprehensive AI strategy aligned with the organization’s goals and objectives. The ideal candidate will be highly strategic and creative as well as possess a deep knowledge of AI techniques to understand the art of the possible. They also need to be highly collaborative, as this role will involve close work with existing resources within the broader organization to drive progress. Experience working in an A/E or construction environment is highly desirable, but not required.3 major components are envisioned for the role: The first and most material will be to work with Suffolk Design, a fully integrated architectural and engineering services vertical within Suffolk Construction, which aims to leverage Suffolk’s core construction capabilities along with innovative technologies, to create a disruptive digital design and engineering platform, capable of delivering construction-ready design with unprecedented levels of speed, accuracy, and technical competence. The role will work with Suffolk Design resources to lead the integration of artificial intelligence into our architectural and engineering design processes. Some development may also be required, but it is envisioned that existing tools and solutions with the market will be leveraged, developing only if necessary, and typically in collaboration with external partners and / or cross functional internal teams. The second is to work with Suffolk’s Data Analytics team and maintain an overview of the Predictive and ML work happening within the Construction vertical. The third is to focus on understanding and piloting Large Language Models to capture business value, including working with strategic partners like Microsoft.ResponsibilitiesOverall:Develop and execute a comprehensive AI strategy aligned with the organization’s goals and objectives.Define, coordinate and maintain an overall view of all AI initiatives within the broader Suffolk organization, ensuring a balanced and coherent portfolio that will deliver business value and allocate resources efficiently.Develop a governance model for AI applications that defines how users interact with approved AI platforms and ensure fair and ethical use of AI technology.Stay ahead of the latest trends and advancements in AI and related fields and incorporate this knowledge into our investments into AI.Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, providing regular updates on AI projects, progress, and outcomes.Communicate technical concepts and strategies to senior executives and other non-technical stakeholders.In partnership with Chief Data Officer and Marketing, support reach and relevant efforts to evangelize Suffolk’s leadership position on Artificial IntelligenceResponsibilities within the Design vertical:Lead the design and development of a platform for digital engineering and design, leveraging AI solutions, models and algorithms to streamline the design process, in collaboration with the Director of Design Technology.Conduct research and analysis to identify opportunities for AI-driven automation and optimization in our design processesDevelop a deep understanding of the market landscape and emerging trends in AI applications for design, in collaboration with Suffolk TechnologiesCollaborate with Suffolk Design Architecture, Engineering, and Digital Engineering teams to integrate AI technologies into workflows and processes, working with development resources if necessaryEvaluate and select appropriate AI frameworks, tools, and technologies to support transformative design delivery processes. In collaboration with Suffolk’s industry-leading Data Analytics team, establish data pipelines and infrastructure to support these AI initiatives.Responsibilities within the Construction vertical:Understand the state of play of Predictive and Machine Learning applications for construction, in collaboration with Suffolk Technologies, and help inform areas of focus for Suffolk’s Data team, working with Director of Data Science and AnalyticsResponsibilities with respect to Large Language Models and other cutting edge AI applications:In collaboration with different business units, scope, define and launch LLM pilots that could deliver business value.Drive and monitor pilot progress, incl. working with senior stakeholders to address roadblocks if necessary.Develop and implement value assessment framework, and assess pilots for value delivered.Make recommendations on which use cases to scale company-wide; evaluate resources needed to deliver and make the business case.QualificationsBachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related fieldAt least 5 years experience working in strategy roles, ideally technology strategyAt least 10 years of experience in AI development and implementation, ideally with both Product Management and AI Engineering experienceStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsExcellent communication and collaboration skillsExperience in architecture, engineering, or related fields is a plusCandidate must possess Suffolk’s Core Values: Passion, Integrity, Hard Work, Professionalism, and Caring
