Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Operations Engineer

Location: Waterville-ME

Onsite Role

The artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/Client) operations engineer works with team to design, implement and manage artificial intelligence and machine learning platforms for use in instruction and research. Required qualifications include experience in the configuration, system administration, and operation of cloud infrastructure. Experience with or an interest in learning about machine learning and artificial intelligence libraries is essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, expertise, and guidance to build and manage computing solutions that facilitate the academic pursuits of faculty
  • Participate in technical research and development to help inspire innovation within ITS organization
  • Consult on computational needs and propose creative solutions taking advantage of resources available locally or at partner institutions
  • Design, implement, and manage AI/Client systems as required to serve computational needs of faculty and students
  • Collect utilization data and monitor AI/Client systems and related network performance
  • Champion AI/Client utilization and efforts to a broad audience
  • Convert ideas into effective projects
  • Conduct analyses and interpret results to guide decisions related to AI/Client products
  • Connect with vendors, colleagues, and professional groups, to maintain current knowledge of relevant AI/Client tools and techniques and their potential usefulness in research and instruction.
  • Provide continuous review of the AI/Client support strategies to determine functionality; participate in needs assessment efforts with others in ITS and at partner institutions
  • Prioritize various projects and initiatives with peer and supervisor input
  • Actively participate and represent the company in the larger AI and Client community regionally and nationally
  • Qualifications:Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in education and experience; advanced degree preferred
  • One year of experience working with cloud-based infrastructure; three or more is preferred
  • Three years of related work experience in a professional setting
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a programming language used for Client
  • Experience with configuration, system administration, and operation of cloud infrastructure, preferably Google cloud
  • Experience with containerization
  • Ability to assess cloud solutions and configure and manage hybrid computing clusters
  • Demonstrated proficiency administering and optimizing performance of and/or developing applications on UNIX-based systems
  • Ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills; ability to handle multiple and varied tasks independently
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible, show initiative, and have a results-driven philosophy
  • Effective interpersonal, spoken, and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong aptitude for collaborating and creating with others

  • Ability to work with people of varying levels of technical experience and translate complex technical information appropriately
  • Preferred qualifications: Proficiency in PyTorch/TensorFlow, and/or Client in R
  • Experience with container orchestration
  • Big data technologies (e.g. Snowflake, BigQuery, redshift)
  • High performance computing and network environments
  • Large scale data stores, as well as other virtualization and scheduling software
