MITRE Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) is seeking technical staff to join our team located at MITRE in McLean, VA to develop innovative AI/ML solutions for addressing tough aviation challenges in the public interest. You will have the opportunity to work on various aviation research programs, leveraging one of the largest repositories of aviation data to address aspects of safety and efficiency within the aviation system. We are seeking new team members with skills in machine learning, deep learning, text mining, natural language processing, big data, and software/application development. Job Responsibilities:

  • Work in innovation and research initiatives related to complex, multi-modal aviation data (tabular, text, speech, imagery) by applying techniques of machine learning/deep learning, applied mathematics, optimization, and statistics.

  • Investigate innovative machine learning, artificial intelligence, and statistical techniques for addressing aviation challenges.

  • Collaborate with aviation domain experts and other machine learning engineers and data scientists to translate aviation problems into machine learning problems.

  • Design and implement feature engineering and machine learning pipelines, deploying machine learning solutions into production.

  • Optimize machine learning solutions for performance and scalability.

  • Enhance and maintain current machine learning tools and capabilities.

  • Conduct quantitative data analysis using a variety of fused datasets by applying information retrieval, analysis, and visualization processes.

  • Explain analyses and machine learning solutions to technical audience.

  • Commit to continued learning and stay up to date with latest advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence.

  • Liaise with other teams across MITRE to enhance technological stack, to enable the adoption of the latest advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience developing and applying Deep Learning solutions, e.g., developing data pre-processing pipelines, modeling, constructing customized Deep Learning models (leveraging CNNs/RNNs/LSTMs/Transformers) as well as deploying inferencing pipelines to process unseen data at scale.

  • Experience with one or more Deep Learning development frameworks such as Tensorflow or PyTorch.

  • Experience and demonstrated deep technical skills in one or more of the following areas: Machine Learning, Recommendation Systems, Pattern Recognition, Anomaly Detection, Natural Language Processing/Understanding, or Computer Vision.

  • Experience with scientific and machine learning libraries e.g., Scikit-learn, SciPy, NumPy.

  • Experience with big data processing skills and systems, such as PySpark, SQL, Hadoop, Oracle, Postgres.

  • Experience with data visualization libraries such as Plotly, Bokeh, Matplotlib/Seaborn.

  • Experience with containerized services and orchestration tools (Docker Swarm, Kubernetes)

  • Interest in complex multi-disciplinary problems and ability to work with colleagues across Engineering domains.

  • Ability to work with loosely defined objectives and turn these into concrete machine learning problems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, Statistics, or related subjects.

  • Experience applying machine learning in the aviation or transportation domain.

  • Exposure to a broad range of domains of Deep Learning, such as Image Segmentation, Time-Series Forecasting, Anomaly Detection, Autoencoders, Generative Models, Self-Supervised Learning, Reinforcement Learning, etc.

  • Experience training and deploying machine learning models at scale on High-Performing Computing or distributed cloud environments.

  • Strong software development skills. Proficiency in Python and Java preferred.

  • Experience building large-scale data processing pipelines.

  • Experience with MLOps practice and tools (such as MLFlow, AWS Sagemaker), serving trained models in a live system, and automating model retain and registry.

  • Self-motivated, creative, collaborative, and mission focused.

  • Critical thinking, including the ability to understand a complex engineering problem and propose novel solutions.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and significant experience working with multi-disciplined teams.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to convey complex ideas or analyses in a clear and organized manner.
