Role Overview:

Smith+Nephew seeks an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Science Intern in the Robotics and Enabling Technology business to join the AI Center of Excellence and work on early innovation efforts related to Robotics. The role will allow an enthusiastic individual to contribute to cutting edge projects making use of data through rapid proof-of-concept creation and prototyping to help deliver meaningful enhancements to S+N products all with the goal of helping our patients live a Life Unlimited. The ideal candidate is always curious but applies rigor to any problem they choose to solve. The candidate is able to work independently, but also in full collaboration with other team members. The position will be based in Pittsburgh, PA.

Responsibilities:

  • This opportunity will involve working with a small team of Data Scientists to conduct state-of-the-art research and development of next generation AI applications related to orthopedics, wound care, or sports medicine.
  • Responsibilities include researching the latest generation of AI models, obtaining and cleaning training data sets, developing feature encodings, coding and implementation of machine learning methods, analyzing and validating models with statistical techniques, and developing interfaces for exploring and utilizing AI.

Education:

  • Enrolled in a bachelor's program for a relevant engineering discipline (i.e. Data Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computer Engineering).

Experience:

  • Experience using machine learning tools in an academic setting required

Competencies:

  • Strong coding skills in Python, R, MATLAB, or similar data science coding languages.
  • Familiarity with machine learning libraries such as Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, NumPy, Pandas, PyTorch or Keras.
  • Strong understanding of data analytic techniques and the ability to implement these approaches.
  • Passionate about modeling excellence in the discipline of data analysis.
  • Works very well in a collaborative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, and thrives under pressure.
  • Can work very well with geographically distributed teams and can work with teams from a very diverse background.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
